Most people are familiar with the fight, flight or freeze concept when the body either prepares for escape or physical assertion in response to a stimuli which is perceived as threatening. This response is governed by a truly extraordinary system: the autonomic nervous system. It is part of our amazing make-up which helps to keep us alive and safe at times of threat. When humans lived a very physical life this was an appropriate way for the body to deal with such issues, however, as the environment has changed we, as humans have not evolved this concept. Therefore, the stress response is now triggered at psychological events that build up over time. This leads to increased stress hormones in our blood that creates imbalance in the body and over time has detrimental effects to our health. Learning to identify triggers and develop appropriate coping strategies are key to maintaining health.
